SINATRA''S MASTERPIECE OF 1958

Years ago, and 30 years after its release, I purchased this album on CD. To say it was life changing is being a little overdramatic, but when you consider this is Sinatra, this is Riddle, and this collection of songs contains many from the Great American Songbook; when you look at the album''s artwork on the cover and see a Pagliacci-style painting of Sinatra (who ironically had a fear of clowns) that even more ironically won a Grammy that year, maybe overdramatic isn''t such a bad adjective.

This storied and favorite torch song collection has been long the subject of music lovers, broken hearted or otherwise, for decades. The lush, understated (and sometimes) jazz tinged arrangements were, again, written by Nelson Riddle, that arranger who set the standard, during a particularly difficult time of loss in his personal life. He''s been quoted that those losses helped him maintain the somberness of moods in his charts. Sinatra, for his part, wanted Gordon Jenkins to do this album, but Mr. Jenkins was unavailable; the project went to Riddle, and with more time to write the charts than Riddle was accustomed to being afforded by Frank. Clearly, the results are still stunning (and cathartic?) 60 years later. For my money, and probably yours too, the gem here is the first official release of sessions on May 29 of ''58, when Sinatra attempted the glorious Billy Strayhorn monument, "Lush Life". With Nelson Riddle out on the road, his counterpart the great and underappreciated concertmaster Felix Slatkin was at the helm. Of the little we hear, the arrangement was probably sensational. But most singers (and listeners) will tell you, the song is no sail through when trying to perform it. Riddle''s chart had tempo changes and key changes that frustrated Sinatra, (as we hear) to the point of "putting it aside". One can only wonder what the finished product might have been (or if Riddle himself had been present, could he have gotten at least another take or two out of Frank?) The additional bonus tracks, including a long session of (and including the ultimately panned alternate orchestral intro) of Angel Eyes are a welcome glimpse into the inner workings of these geniuses in the studio. (what else can be said of Sinatra singing Angel Eyes? I do like the way they originally did the intro!) This is Sinatra''s masterpiece of 1958, presented in great sound and decent packaging (I''m no fan of cardboard digipaks) with added photos and commentary, as well as session information. A fitting anniversary edition.

-Been listening to it this morning. I''m a stereo buff, so I listened to the New 2018 Stereo Mix first. Noticed a pronounced clarity in the vocal. They managed to capture it with true reverb, not pseudo sounding as if an electronic gadget was used, but rather Frank''s vocal as it was recorded in a real hall. I know they initially used a 3-track recorder in 1958, so one track must have been specifically used to capture the vocal and the other two split for the orchestrations.

-(Stereo)-I like the fact that they didn''t aim for the standard isolated panning from left to right for the orchestrations, but rather kept it clean down the middle which created a very realistic sounding audio ambience. You feel that you are right there in the middle with the orchestrations, while Frank''s vocal is seamlessly up front being caressed by the instruments. I was very impressed and could tell that a lot of care went into this remastering. With only 3 tracks recorded initially, which was the method used with the early multi-track process, the engineers went to great lengths to keep the phasing correct as recorded.

-Compare this to the previous stereo versions and you can tell that this mastering is cleaner and much more properly phased. I also listened to the Mono versions, very balanced, clean and with true hall effect on the vocal standing out up front.

-I would recommend this to those who have critical ears to hear the fruits of the mastering technicians who did a phenomenal job producing a mastering in line with the way this was actually recorded without over doing it with all the modern day audio cleaning techniques . Also to anyone else who would want to hear Frank''s voice as clear and clean as he belted it out in the studio in 1958! Very good job, and I can imagine there will more albums receiving the same treatment to come!

I originally discovered this album while going through my parents home after their passing. I remember that they used to play it on an old stereo they had. I hadn''t heard it in years and brought it home to listen to. Boy, this album is a classic. I grew up with and listen to jazz and classic rock. I have a very high end stereo system and this album is mesmerizing.
I have since bought the CD, an original vinyl on eBay and now this album. It sounds great and is dead silent in vinyl.
Everyone I turn on to this album is blown away by the music and Frank''s voice. How did I miss this album all of my life?

1)-They offered only the Stereo Version & no bonus songs. I like the bonus songs. It occasionally sheds further light on the album. I would have liked to buy either them both(stereo & Mono ver.) or just the stereo version & the bonus songs(this is more likely)
2)- 238kps. Really ??? 350kps is archival quality[yes- i can hear the difference) or Flac. Offer a choice.
3)- Zero art work & no booklet or scans.
Maybe they will offer this later. Doubt this, though. Well, here''s hoping. I''ll be watching you happy people.

This is great art. Each song a perfect portrait. Frank Sinatra is musical integrity. He is the greatest interpretive artist of the Twentieth Century and this is Frank Sinatra in his prime. Nelson Riddle’s soaring, somber, sometimes harrowing arrangements of agonizing torch songs. The baton of violin virtuoso Felix Slatkin lending unity to a body of truly great musicians. So many highlights in this wonderful reissue of an import Amercian work of art.
What’s New with Sinatra’s aching pas de deux vocal dance with Ray Sims trombone. Van Heusen and Kahn’s Only The Lonely, Sinatra’s dramatic read of Jule Styne and Sammy Kahn’s Guess I’ll Hang My Tears Out To Dry. The definitive Ebb Tide with Riddle’s stunning arrangement. And as a bonus Sinatra’s uncompleted, but oh boy worth the price of admission, attempt at Billy Strayhorn’s Lush Life plus a chance to hear the master work out just how he wants to perfect Angel Eyes. Ethereal.

I have been listening to this recording since I was born over 60 years ago. It was one of my Mom''s favorite recordings. I grew up with Frank Sinatra being played in my house. When I was a teen I discovered the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Laura Nyro, the music of my generation. But this recording was never too far from my turntable, and then later on my CD player. This is a landmark recording by the greatest male vocalist in the world. The person who created a landscape for others to follow. He created "Concept" albums. This being one of them, and I believe the first one ever made. When Frank reaches for notes and hits them, you are driven upward with him on his quest to let you know what those words mean to him, as well as you the listener. Not many can give you that kind of emotional output while singing.
Many great vocalists create an unattached emotional feeling to you the listener. Great performances rather than a journey through the singers soul. (See Lady Gaga & Barbra Streisand for that type of journey - Brilliant and It has its merits but no real content with true emotional vulnerability - yes technically off the map but not my cup of tea compared to Frank Sinatra) So I say, get this recording. Sit down and realize you are about to go somewhere with someone who has been there. You are not alone in what you feel. Frank is feeling it with you. Amazing arrangements by Nelson Riddle who outdoes what he does over and over. (Think George Martin''s arrangement of the Beatles "I Am the Walrus" over and over and over) Brilliant stuff!

By far this is the best vinyl version available. Forget the cheaper and inferior ones on the unofficial labels such as Wax Time and Not Now Music which would have been digitally sourced. This is a new remastering and remixing sourced from original analogue tapes and it is sublime. More depth and clarity coupled with an excellent and virtually crackle free presssing. This is Sinatra at his very best. Nothing up tempo just sad songs about being lonely with wonderful arrangements and orchestration by Nelson Riddle. When first released way back in 1958 there were seperate stereo and mono versions the latter of which was generally preferred. I have the original MOFI mono release which came with their 1983 Sinatra boxset which I thought would be extremely hard to beat. This latest release is superior in every respect. Irrespective of how many vinyl versions you might have buy this one if you really appreciate sound quality and have a reasonable system.
